One of the main distinguishing features most commonly associated with a cowboy boot is the high underslung heel with a narrow or pointed toe. Other features would be a long adorned boot shaft with pull tabs, a metal arch in the shank and fancy stitching on the top of the vamp.
Many of such characteristics sprung out of practical considerations; The high underslung heel kept the cowboys foot from slipping through the stirrup when his horse stopped or turned abruptly while the narrow toe of the boot made it easier to locate the stirrup quickly when mounting the horse. The high shaft protected the legs from rubbing and gouging in rough work in the saddle and stitching on the boots reinforced the leather and prevented it from sagging. The reinforced steel arch on the other hand braced the cowboy while he rode and standing up.
These above features quickly transcended the realm of utility, and the cowboy boots were not possessed exclusively by the working cowboy for very long. Hollywood’s later influence and the growing popularity of Western films propelled them into popular culture where the to this day still remain perceived as the epitome of western culture.
