This belt transcends the realm of conventionality by tapping directly into the epicenter of counter-culture at its peak, with Dennis Hopper at the helm, portraying his unapologetic self in his 1971 documentary about his life in the wake of his box office success, 'Easy Rider'. One iconic element that adorned Hopper throughout the film was a distinctive large brass buckle belt with a brown leather strap. This very belt was a crucial part of his ensemble, contributing to his unique and iconic style showcased in the film. It has become a symbol of that era, encapsulating a particular moment in his life and the counterculture of the early 1970s. Inspired by Hopper's legendary belt, we proudly introduce 'The Hopper Belt' as a part of our American Dreamer collection. The buckle is meticulously cast from a substantial 110 grams of solid brass, crafted in precise accordance with Hopper's original buckle. The strap is skillfully created using 100% Italian full-grain bovine leather. We preserve the natural grain and patina of full-grain leather, ensuring each piece embodies a unique, one-of-a-kind appearance. Over time, the leather darkens and its texture softens, creating a timeless, vintage look. Every Hopper Belt is artisanally handcrafted in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, where skill meets heritage, resulting in a piece that not only pays homage to a cultural icon but also epitomizes unparalleled craftsmanship and timeless style. Special features:
  • Handcrafted in Italy
  • Large impressive buckle measuring 106mm x 71mm (4.2” x 2.8”), made of solid brass with a weight of 110 grams
  • Strap hight: 37mm (1.46”)
  • 100% Italian bovine leather – vegetable tanned
  • Done in precise accordance to the belt worn by Dennis Hopper in The American Dreamer (1971)

A truly vintage t-shirt means tubular knit. It’s old-school, but to the t-shirt connoisseur, there is NO alternative. The absence of side-seams yields comfort that is unrivaled. It is the original way to produce a t-shirt  and the hall-mark of 1950’s style t-shirts. Like the original tees of the 50’s our tees are all done using the same tubular construction with no side seams adding an incredible fit and durability. The shoulders and neck are taped, which adds effort to construction, but provides an extra touch of structure to the garment. In addition we have added double-needle stitching at the sleeves and bottom hem to make it extra durable. Lastly set-in sleeves and a 7/8” set-in rib-collar has been added, which means no visible seams along the neck and shoulders. Done in a sturdy and robust 100% cotton, knitted with a 18/1 threadwidth and preshrunk so it stays true-to-size by reducing shrinkage. The motif has been screen printed using Plastisol ink and heat pressed to our tees in our Copenhagen studio.

Denni Hopper The American Dreamer Hopper belt Hopper Chimayo jacket

The Hopper belt is part of a curated collection that draws inspiration from the never-theatrically-released Dennis Hopper counter-culture quasi-documentary from 1971, “The American Dreamer”. It provides a glimpse into counter-cultural philosophies that fueled a generational gap and brought along a massive cultural transformation across the post-WW2 Western world.

Our focus, however, lies less with the film's counter-culture message and more on the film's visual universe, which is truly unique and unparalleled. The film was recorded in Taos, New Mexico, a cultural melting pot blending Northern European, Hispanic, and Native American cultures. This amalgamation of cultural influences produces a truly unique stylistic expression, merging Western and denim wear with hippie culture, Hispanic weaving, and Native American jewelry.

Add to all of this the 70s Hollywood glam, together with Hopper's traditionally rugged Taos ranch adorned with avant-garde contemporary art, and you have a tapestry that reflects the essence of a cultural era, a blend of diverse influences converging in a unique singular visual language.

Legend has it, although uncorroborated and thus purely speculative, that Hopper either gifted the belt to Kris Kristofferson, or Kris got inspired by Hopper and went out to purchase the belt on his own after the recording of Hopper's film 'The Last Movie' (1971), in which Kris played a supporting role.

Either way, shortly after the recording of 'The Last Movie' in 1971, Kris is seen wearing the 'Hopper' belt in several movies (Cisco Pike 1972, 'A Star is Born' 1976, 'Convoy' 1978), occasions, and stage appearances from 1971-1978.
